ALMATY VISTA/Practical

Practical

Everything to know before you go: seasons, transport, connectivity, money and safety.

When to go

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are best for nature. Summer suits mountains and lakes; winter is for skiing, skating and city programmes.

Entry

Citizens of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and many EU countries can usually visit visa-free for short trips (typically up to 30 days). Rules change – check official sources before travelling.

Time zone

All of Kazakhstan uses UTC+5 – 3 hours ahead of Germany in summer, 4 in winter.

Money

The currency is the Kazakhstani tenge (KZT). Cards are accepted almost everywhere in the city; carry cash for villages and nature trips.

Transport

Ride-hailing apps work well in Almaty. For the mountains, Talgar and long trips, a private car with driver is better.

Connectivity

Mobile internet works in the city and on main roads; it can drop in mountains and canyons. Local SIM or eSIM is available at the airport.

Weather & clothing

Mountain weather changes fast: even in summer bring a warm layer, rain jacket and good shoes. The sun is strong at altitude.

Safety

Mountain routes are chosen by weather, road and season. Park and reserve rules apply in protected areas.

Airport & transfer

ALA airport is in the north-east of Almaty. Pickup timed to your arrival and transfers can be booked via the enquiry.
