The Assy Plateau is one of the most scenic spots in the Almaty region, reachable only by 4x4. The route runs through the Turgen Gorge, with its conifer forests and mountain river, climbing to 2,600–2,800 m, where endless alpine meadows open up. The plateau is home to the Assy-Turgen astrophysical observatory, known for some of the best stargazing conditions far from city light.
